Katie Asmus is a pioneer and internationally recognized leader in the fields of wilderness therapy, ecotherapy, adventure therapy, and somatic psychology. For over 30 years she has guided individuals and groups in nature, apprenticed to ceremony and rites of passage, and brought body-mind connection, creative arts, and present-moment awareness into the healing process. She has trained therapists and healers internationally for over 25 years, taught graduate students at Naropa University, Prescott College, and other institutions for two decades, and served as the U.S. Representative to the International Adventure Therapy Community from 2015-2025. Honored with an Exceptional Practitioner Award in her field, Katie is known for bringing warmth, precision, and embodied integrity to her teaching and mentorship.
As founder of the Somatic Nature Therapy Institute in Boulder, Colorado, Katie has created and facilitated a wide array of trainings, retreats, and mentorship programs—online and in person—that weave together somatic trauma work, nature-based therapy skills, and rites of passage facilitation. Her signature programs include Collaborations With the Natural World, Intro to Therapeutic Nature-Based Interventions, Somatic Soul-Based Trauma Training, and the Ceremony and Rites of Passage Global Training. Across these offerings, Katie has trained and guided tens of thousands of therapists, coaches, and helping professionals around the world, building a global community of practitioners grounded in body-mind wisdom and the teachings of the natural world.
Katie’s work arises from a deep trust in our innate capacity to heal and an awe for the strength and resiliency of the human spirit. She believes strongly in the power of spending time in nature as a way to listen inward, cultivate embodied presence, and reconnect with our essential belonging in the greater web of life. Through her teaching, writing, and international collaborations—including the co-created Nature-Based Therapy Certification with Human-Nature Counselling Society in Canada—Katie continues to tend thresholds and inspire practitioners to meet the world with compassion, authenticity, and reverence for all of life.
